Or rather, a reincarnation of his memories of her, which isn’t quite the same thing. Investigating a stricken space station orbiting the mysterious planet Solaris, shrink Clooney finds he has a ‘visitor’ – a spooky reincarnation of his late wife. As writer-director-editor and cinematographer, Soderbergh does a remarkable job of echoing the original’s Soviet-era look and solemnity, yet moves the story along without compromising its intriguing musings on the knowability of self and others. It’s hard to imagine a Hollywood exec even sitting through Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky’s Solaris(1972), never mind stumping up for Steven Soderbergh’s US remake, but perhaps the presence of producer James Cameron facilitated this most introspective of space operas. ![]() TJĬast: George Clooney, Natascha McElhone, Jeremy Davies Young Lucas evidently believed in heroic individualism, fast cars and the possibility of escape, yet it’s the visualisation of an entire society shaped by universal surveillance, government-supplied sedatives and android police carrying very big sticks which rings darker and truer than the director’s subsequent, significantly more populist output. Viewed today – the only version available is Lucas and co-writer Walter Murch’s digitally spruced-up 2004 ‘Director’s Cut’ – its shaven headed-cast, chillingly benign language intoning state propaganda and oppressive widescreen palette of glacial whites make for genuinely unnerving viewing. The studio hated the result and the subsequent box-office debacle almost killed both their careers. The best sci-fi movies deal as much with real-world issues as they do with interstellar conflict – it’s just that, in some cases, they may invent entirely new planets to discuss them. But the genre doesn’t just tell stories from long ago about galaxies far, far away. It’s hard to say if the geeks have taken over the entertainment industry or if the world at large has simply come to see the genre’s merits, but there might not be a bigger brand of movie than sci-fi around right now – in fact, it’s almost uncool not to be a fan these days.īut really, how could anyone in the third decade of the 21st century not appreciate science fiction to some degree? Sure, there are those who have an aversion to movies about alien cultures that inspire 4000-word theoretical treatises on fan forums. Dismissed for decades as the realm of nerds and shut-ins, the reputation of science fiction has undergone a dramatic makeover in recent years. ![]() When a new iteration of a game comes out, whether it be Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, or even Call of Duty, fans and critics alike seem to be of two cognitively dissonant mindsets. Well, Dear Reader, here’s where we come to the crux of the Mario dilemma. Between these changes to the gameplay and story, and the obvious graphical upgrade that the GameCube had over the Nintendo 64, it would seem on paper that Super Mario Sunshine was the perfect sequel to Super Mario 64. And in perhaps the biggest change to the gameplay, instead of having only your abilities to run and jump as Mario, you are given a jetpack/water-pump apparatus that lets you extend your jumps, hover in the air, and even blast off into the stratosphere for intense super jumps. Instead of fighting Bowser from the beginning of the game, you are initially after a Shadowy Mario Imposter who, through many twists and turns in the story, is revealed to have a connection to our favorite lizard king. Instead of the rolling green hills of the Mushroom Kingdom, you were exploring the sandy beaches of the tropical Isle Delfino. You ran, jumped, and yahoo-ed as Mario traversed a number of unique, cartoonish worlds, all connected by a hub-world, in order to collect 120 stars (“shine sprites” in this game) so that you could save Princess Peach from the evil Bowser.Īnd while it had these similarities, there were enough changes that Sunshine didn’t feel like a lazy re-skin of 64. Because it was a 3D platforming game in which the player runs around various different levels and worlds collecting stars and coins, Sunshine was largely seen as the sequel to the juggernaut that was Super Mario 64. When Sunshine first came out in the summer of 2002, everyone and their Mama Luigi went nuts over it. Something that has always struck me as odd about this game is the mixed reaction from fans and critics it has received years after its initial release. ![]() So, in the meantime, let’s take a look at Super Mario Sunshine, shall we? So for those of you expecting a typical Canon-style piece on Odyssey, give it a few months and we’ll be on it like moths to a flame. What the Canon aims to do, if you’ll pardon the pun, is take a look back at games that have had enough time to let the dust of initial excitement settle around them so that we can truly appreciate the game for what it has to offer, and not just for the hype that surrounded it upon release. And while I wanted to indulge in a long Canon piece gushing about what a great, nostalgic time I had playing through the many and varied levels of Odyssey, the simple fact of the matter is that not enough time has passed for me to feel that I can fairly analyze it. I, like many of you, have spent the greater part of my last two weeks on this planet indulging in the unabashed explosion of fun that is Super Mario Odyssey, and it had me jonesing to write a piece about Nintendo’s Mustachioed Golden Boy. ![]() We’re looking at Super Mario Sunshine this week, is my point. Well alright, not Doctor Mario, the puzzle game, although that game is a great deal of fun. Don’t get me wrong, I love delving into emotional turmoil and existential dread as much as the next guy, but after a month of poring over different bits of the Silent Hill lore and revisiting some of the more tragic characters that the interactive medium has to offer, I’m in the market for something a bit more bright and cheerful.Īnd folks, when you’re in need of a quick and powerful injection of pure, unadulterated, joyous fun, the Doctor is in. Well folks, now that we’re a week out of our Ooky Spooky Canon Toonies month, I could sure as hell use a pick-me-up. ![]() Because I find it very annoying that I am forced to hatch the egg right away which can sometimes take eleven hours or more. Well, you could put it in storage and hatch the egg when you want. So say that your dragons just finished breeding, but you don't want to hatch that egg right away. I also think that you should create egg storage. But I can't, I have no use for it and now it's taking up space. I recently bought a fire temple thinking that if I decided I didn't like it I could just sell it. Such as the ability to sell element temples. Well done! But I think there are a few things that could be changed and added to improve gameplay. :-)įirst of all, I'd like to say this is an amazing game. And some events need you to have so many items before you can continue, and there’s just stuff all over the place, there are so many different events and icons around your screen that it just looks crazy.īesides that, I don’t have any other issues with the game, but I do hope the few things I do have a problem with get fixed, thank you for reading this crazy long review. You obviously can not join every single event, and they usually only last for 3-7 days. Like, if you don’t play for one week, there are already like 15 new events, tasks, and features. ![]() The second thing I don’t really like is how many events they have going on at one time. Not everyone can spend that much money on an app. I understand that some dragons and structures can be very powerful and can do a lot, but some things cost lots and lots of gems/diamonds. So, what don’t I like? Well, for starters, some things are WAY too expensive. I also love the idea of battling other players, not just the battles in which you are going up the path. It’s fun to visit other people’s dragon lands to see what you can improve on and what you like. I love that the creators release new dragons, items, and events very often. I’ve had this game for a few years now, and it’s actually pretty fun. It is also a great activity to do with your grand children. For me, it is a great exercise in memory to remember the sequence of play needed between the concurrent games to allow for maximum rewards while spending minimal resources. Remember if someone buys a top dragon which is just a little bit stronger, this is what funds the game for everyone else. There are far too many dragons to get them all and DML makes new ones all the time. And you can always just breed your dragons, some of which are cute and others scary. Often there is more than one path to accomplish a goal but some math skills are required to figure out which ones will cost the least jewels and game coins. Timing and the use of math is important to optimize your game play. Participating in these events helps to win powers and tokens which makes your dragons stronger and allows you to better compete in the other concurrent events. Oh yes, there are also special events which you can participle in such as the castle and calendar events, along with others. There is conquering the campaign map, the clan events, the Arena Battles, Enchantment League, the dungeon, and dragon breading. This app allows you to purchase virtual items within the app and may contain third party advertisements that may redirect you to a third party site.ĭML is really 6 games in one which you play simultaneously. ASGM is the world’s fastest-growing source of Hg and can discharge Hg into both the aquatic environment and the terrestrial ecosystem. Thus, Hg is discharged worldwide into the environments. ![]() This became one of the first and the most critical incidents of Hg poisoning due to an industrial site.ĭifferent forms of Hg can be released into the atmosphere, water, and across land as a result of human activities such as burning of fossil fuels (e.g., coal and petroleum), industrial effluents, product waste (e.g., electronic) from intentional use, dental amalgamation, agricultural practices, and ASGM and natural processes, including volcanic eruptions, rock weathering, and forest fires. A famous catastrophic Hg outbreak occurred in Minamata Bay, Japan, in the 1950s, when factory wastewater containing MeHg from a factory was discharged into the Shiranui Sea, poisoning the people who ingested the contaminated seafood. The use of elemental Hg in artisanal and small-scale gold-mining (ASGM) sector can be hazardous because of the inhalation of Hg vapor, which easily penetrates the blood–brain barrier and induces neurotoxicity. Meanwhile, elemental Hg can be converted to MeHg in aquatic sediments. In particular, methylmercury (MeHg) is the most dangerous form because it can bioaccumulate in microorganisms and biomagnify or enhance the trophic levels in aquatic food webs. All its common forms, including elemental (metallic), inorganic, and organic are highly toxic. Mercury (Hg) is listed among the top 10 most harmful metals by the World Health Organization (WHO), and its chemical forms are considered a public health concern. In the future, more research and assessment will be required to investigate the current and evolving situation in ASGM communities. This review summarizes the effects of Hg in Myanmar and other Southeast Asian countries. Attentions should be given regarding the public health concern, specifically for the vulnerable groups such as adults, pregnant women, and children who live near the ASGM activity. To one point, Hg atmospheric concentrations from all observed studies was shown to be extremely high in the vicinity of gold operating areas. ![]() The findings indicated severe Hg contamination around the ASGM process, specifically the gold-amalgamation stage, was significantly high. ASGM-related health risks to miners and nonminers, specifically in Indonesia, the Philippines, and Myanmar, were also assessed. Mercury concentrations exceeding the WHO and United States Environmental Protection Agency guideline values were reported in environmental (i.e., air, water, and soil) and biomonitoring samples (i.e., plants, fish, and human hair). Here, 16 relevant studies were systematically searched by performing the PRISMA flow, combining the keywords of “Hg”, “ASGM”, and relevant study areas. Hg has been widely used in ASGM industries throughout Southeast Asia countries, including Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, and Thailand. ![]() Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) is the world’s fastest-growing source of Hg and can release Hg into the atmosphere, hydrosphere, and geosphere. Mercury (Hg) is one of the most harmful metals and has been a public health concern according to the World Health Organization (WHO). |
